Molasses Cookies

 Ingredients:

1 cup lard or shortening

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 tsp. ginger

1/2 tsp. cloves

1 egg

1 cup molasses (grandma always used sorghum)

1/2 cup warm water

2 tsp. soda

1 tsp. salt

5 cups of flour

Directions:

Cream lard or shortening, sugar and spices together. Add egg and mix. Add molasses and warm water and blend. Add soda dissolved in 1 Tbl. of water. Then mix in flour and salt. Refrigerated and then roll on floured board 1/4 inch thick. Cut with a cookie cutter. Bake in 375 degree oven for 8-10 minutes. Makes about 5 dozen. Frost with powdered sugar frosting. Keep waxed paper between frosted cookies. Cookies will stay soft if a slice of bread is kept in container.

Grandma's Notes: Grandma Bess Van Dusseldorp always made these for Christmas. She made them for all the kids. These are the cookies that Sharon always associates with Grandma. These were submitted to the First Reformed Church of Prairie City cookbook of 1971.
