Old Nebraska Apple Cake

 Ingredients:

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup shortening

1 egg

1 1/2 cup flour

1 tsp. soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

3/4 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 cup nuts (chopped)

3 apples (chopped)


Directions: Cream together sugar, shortening and egg. Add sifted dry ingredients. Stir in apples and nuts. Pour into a 8 x 8 greased pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 40 minutes.

Topping:

1/2 cup margerine

1 cup evaporated milk

1 cup brown sugar

2 TB. flour

2 tsp. vanilla

Cook in a double boiler until smooth. Serve warm over cake.
